The Munter creates manages friction in a belay system.  It can be reversed, from raise to lower or visa versa. The munter hitch must be used with a “pear-shaped” carabiner, or HMS (hemi-spherical)carabiner.This allows for the hitch to reverse itself.

Appropriate uses for rock climbing and canyoneering:

• Belaying.
• Lowering.
• Rappeling.
• Rescue, as part of the “Munter Mule” combination.

These are the steps for tying the Munter Hitch

-Clip the rope through a locking carabiner,  tail of the rope coming out the front of the carabiner

-On the other end and  make a loop

-Flip that loop into the carabiner
